Alright, let’s get this straight. We ain’t doin’ nothin’ fancy here, just makin’ a good ol’ apple spice dump cake. My grandkids love this thing, and it’s so easy even I can whip it up without messin’ it up too bad.
First off, you gotta get your oven goin’. Crank it up to 350, that’s what the young’uns tell me is the right number. Then, you gotta get them apples ready. I just use whatever apples I got laying around, ain’t gotta be nothin’ special. Chop ’em up, not too big, not too small, you know, just right. I throw ‘em in a big bowl, one of them microwave-safe ones. Then, I splash a little bit of apple juice on ‘em, just a couple spoonfuls, to make ‘em kinda juicy. Wrap that bowl up with some of that clingy plastic stuff and stick it in the microwave for about five minutes. That’s to get the apples a little soft, see?
While them apples are cookin’, I get the rest of the stuff ready. You need a box of that yellow cake mix, yeah, the kind you find on sale at the store. Don’t go gettin’ all fancy with some expensive stuff, ain’t no need for that. Pour that cake mix right into a big ol’ bakin’ dish. Just dump it right in, that’s why they call it a dump cake, I reckon. Then, you gotta melt some butter. I just throw it in a pan on the stove, melt it right down, easy peasy. Pour that melted butter all over the cake mix, make sure it gets all wet and covered.
- Butter – one stick, melted
- Yellow cake mix – one box
- Apples – about six, chopped
- Apple juice – a couple spoonfuls
- Cinnamon – a good shake or two
- Nutmeg – just a pinch
- Caramel sauce – as much as your heart desires
Now, them apples should be done. Take ‘em out of the microwave, be careful, it’s hot! Give ‘em a stir, and then pour ‘em right on top of the buttery cake mix. Spread ‘em out nice and even, so everybody gets some apples when you eat it.
Here’s where the spice comes in. I got this little jar of cinnamon, and I just sprinkle it all over the top. Don’t be shy with it, cinnamon’s good for ya, or so they say. Then, I add a little bit of nutmeg, just a tiny pinch, that stuff’s strong. If you got other spices you like, go ahead and throw ‘em in too. Ain’t no rules when you’re cookin’, just make it taste good.
Now the secret ingredient, well not so secret, but my grandkids love it. Caramel sauce! Yep, I just drizzle that stuff all over the top. Makes it taste like them candy apples they sell at the fair. Them kids go crazy for it.
Once you got everything dumped in the dish, stick it in that hot oven. Let it bake for about half an hour, maybe a little longer. You’ll know it’s done when the top is golden brown and bubbly. Let it cool for a bit before you try to eat it, ‘cause that stuff is hotter than a pistol!
That’s it! That’s how you make an apple spice dump cake. It ain’t fancy, ain’t pretty, but it sure is good. And it’s easy enough for anyone to make, even an old woman like me. My grandkids always ask for it, and that makes me happy. So go on, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. And if you mess it up, well, nobody’s perfect. Just try again. That’s what I always say.
And remember, don’t go fussin’ over exact amounts, a little more of this, a little less of that, it’ll all turn out just fine. That’s the beauty of a dump cake. Just dump it all in and let the oven do the work.
One more thing, sometimes I add a bit of oats on top before baking, makes it a little bit crunchy, which my husband likes. And sometimes, if I’m feelin’ extra fancy, I’ll put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top when it’s still warm. Oh, that’s good eatin’ right there!
