Homemade Dessert Enchilada: Your New Family Favorite

[Body]

Alright, let’s gab about this “dessert enchilada” thing. I heard some folks talkin’ ’bout it, and I was like, “Huh? Enchiladas? Them’s for dinner, not for sweets!” But then I got to thinkin’, and well, I ain’t one to shy away from tryin’ somethin’ new, even if it sounds a bit… odd.

So, is there a dessert enchilada? Well, butter my biscuits and call me Sally, turns out there is! It ain’t somethin’ I grew up with, mind you. We had good ol’ apple pie or maybe some peach cobbler if the peaches were ripe. But these young folks, they always comin’ up with somethin’ different.

Now, from what I gather, this dessert enchilada ain’t your regular chicken or cheese enchilada covered in that spicy sauce. Nope, this here’s a sweet treat. Think of it like this: you take them tortillas, the flat round bread things, and instead of fillin’ ’em with meat and beans, you stuff ’em with sweet stuff.

What kind of sweet stuff, you ask? Well, I hear tell they use all sorts of things. Apples and cinnamon, that’s a good one, especially when the weather starts gettin’ chilly. Makes the whole house smell warm and cozy. Some folks put in cherries, or peaches, or even that stuff they call “pie fillin’.” You know, that gooey stuff in a can? I ain’t a big fan of that canned stuff myself, but I reckon it works alright in these dessert enchiladas.

  • Apples and Cinnamon: Good for a fall treat.
  • Cherries or Peaches: If you like somethin’ fruity.
  • Pie Filling: Easy to use, if you ain’t got fresh fruit.

Then, they put them filled-up tortillas in a dish, like you do with regular enchiladas. But instead of pourin’ on that red sauce, they might drizzle on some melted butter, maybe sprinkle some sugar, and then bake it till it’s all bubbly and warm. Some folks even put whipped cream on top, or a scoop of that cold ice cream stuff. My grandkids love that ice cream, but it gives me the shivers!

I saw one recipe that said to butter a bakin’ dish. That makes sense, keeps things from stickin’. The recipe said to use a “2-quart bakin’ dish,” or one of them “11×7 inch” ones. I ain’t got no fancy bakin’ dishes, I just use what I got. As long as it holds the food, it’s good enough for me. They say to spoon the sweet fillin’ down the middle of each tortilla, then roll ‘em up like a little package. Sounds easy enough, even for an old gal like me.

Now, I ain’t tasted one of these dessert enchiladas myself, not yet anyway. But I reckon they’d be right tasty, especially with a cup of hot coffee or maybe some warm milk. It’s kinda like a different way to eat pie, I guess. And who don’t like pie? It’s sweet, it’s warm, and it fills your belly. That’s all that matters, right?

This whole dessert enchilada thing reminds me of somethin’ my neighbor, Martha, used to say. She always said, “Life’s too short to eat the same old thing every day.” And Martha, bless her heart, she knew a thing or two about good eatin’. So, I figure, why not give these dessert enchiladas a try? Might be the best thing since sliced bread, or might be a flop. But you never know till you try, right?

And you know what else? I bet you could get creative with it. Throw in some nuts, maybe some raisins, whatever you got on hand. That’s how we cooked back in the day, used what we had and made it work. No fancy recipes, just good ol’ common sense and a whole lotta love. Maybe I’ll try makin’ some next week when the grandkids come over. They’ll get a kick out of it, I betcha.

So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ different, somethin’ sweet, and somethin’ a little bit… unexpected, give this dessert enchilada thing a whirl. It might just surprise you. And hey, if it don’t turn out perfect, don’t you fret. Just add more sugar, that’s what I always say. Sugar makes everything better.
