Well, let me tell you somethin’ about cooking, you hear? I seen a lot in my days, and I know a thing or two about puttin’ food on the table. Now, this here dish, onion and radishes cooked together, it ain’t fancy, but it sure is tasty. And easy! Lord knows, we all need easy sometimes.
You take them radishes, the little red devils, all peppery and such. Some folks, they just eat ’em raw. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Not me. I like to tame ’em a bit, you know? And onions, oh, onions make everything better. They the workhorses of the kitchen, I always say.
First thing you gotta do is wash them radishes good. Get all that dirt off. Dirt ain’t good eatin’. Then you chop off the tops and the little stringy bottoms. Some folks like to leave a little green on, but I say get rid of it. Makes ’em look neater.
- Chop ’em up, those radishes.
- Don’t need to be tiny, just bite-sized.
- Like you’re feedin’ a chicken, but a little bigger.
Then, you get yourself an onion. Red one is good for roasting, I think, make a better looking and better tasting. Peel that onion, chop it up too. Don’t matter if it’s big chunks or little ones. Onion cooks down anyway. Gets all sweet and soft.
Now, here’s the secret. You gotta have some fat. Fat makes everything taste good. You can use butter if you’re feelin’ fancy, I guess, it make the radish sweet. But I just use what I got. A little oil, bacon grease if I have some. That’s the good stuff right there. Adds a nice flavor to the whole thing.
Toss them radishes and onions with that oil. Don’t be shy with it. You want ’em coated good. Then, sprinkle on some salt and pepper. Maybe a little garlic powder if you like. I like garlic. Makes everything taste better, ‘cept maybe ice cream.
Now, you can cook ’em in a pan on the stove if you want. Just keep an eye on ’em, stir ’em around so they don’t burn. But I like to roast ’em in the oven. Makes the house smell good, and you don’t gotta watch ’em so close.
- Preheat that oven to 400.

Spread them radishes and onions on a baking sheet. Don’t crowd ’em too much. Give ’em some room to breathe, you know? They need space to get all nice and brown. If you use a cast iron skillet, it’s also good, make the vegetables tastier.
Pop that pan in the oven and let ’em roast. Maybe 20 minutes, maybe 30. Depends on your oven. Just keep an eye on ’em. You want ’em to be soft, not mushy. And a little brown around the edges. That’s where the flavor is, them brown bits.
When they’re done, take ’em out of the oven. Let ’em cool just a bit. You don’t want to burn your tongue. Then, you can eat ’em just like that. Or you can put ’em on top of somethin’ else. Like a piece of meat or some mashed potatoes. Makes a plain meal somethin’ special.
Some folks, they like to add other things to this here dish. Herbs and such. That’s fine, I guess. But I like to keep it simple. Radishes and onions, that’s all you need. Maybe a little somethin’ green on top if you’re feelin’ fancy. Parsley or chives, somethin’ like that.
This here dish, it ain’t gonna win any prizes. It ain’t pretty. But it’s good. It’s honest food. And it’s easy. And sometimes, that’s all you need. A little somethin’ easy and good to fill your belly and warm your soul.
Now, you go on and try it yourself. Onion and radishes cooked together. You might be surprised how good it is. And if you don’t like it, well, that’s okay too. More for me, I guess.

They are good for your health.
