Well, howdy there! Let’s talk ’bout some of them sweet things, desserts I reckon you call ’em. Someone was yappin’ ’bout desserts that has a lot of coal. Now, I ain’t talkin’ ’bout the stuff you burn in the stove, mind you. I mean desserts that look like coal.
First off, gotta say, I don’t rightly know why anyone’d wanna eat somethin’ that looks like coal. But folks these days, they got all sorts of strange ideas. Anyways, I heard tell of some folks makin’ these “lumps of coal” treats. They say it’s for them “naughty” kids, but I reckon it’s just another excuse to eat somethin’ sweet.
Now, how they make these coal-lookin’ desserts? Seems there’s a few ways. One way I heard ’bout uses them Oreo cookies. You know, the black and white ones? They crush ’em up real fine, mix ’em with butter, and roll ’em into little balls. Then they coat ’em in more crushed Oreo crumbs or maybe some black sugar. Makes ’em look just like little lumps of coal, they say.
- Crushed Oreo Coal: Easy peasy. Just smash up them Oreos, mix with butter, roll ’em up, and coat ’em. Even I could do that, and I ain’t no fancy baker.
- Chocolate Truffle Coal: These are a bit fancier. They use chocolate, cream, and butter, make a kinda soft candy, and then roll it in black cocoa powder. Sounds like a lot of work to me, but I hear tell they’re mighty tasty.
- Rice Krispie Coal: You know them Rice Krispies? The cereal that goes snap, crackle, pop? Well, you can melt marshmallows and butter, mix in the cereal, and add some black food coloring. Then you shape it into lumps and let it cool. Kids probably love it, all that sugar and goo.
I also heard tell of folks makin’ coal candy outta somethin’ called “chocolate truffles.” Now, I ain’t never had no fancy truffle, but from what I gather, it’s like a real soft chocolate candy. They mix up the chocolate and stuff, roll it into balls, and then they coat it in this black cocoa powder. Makes it look real dark and coal-like. They say it’s delicious, but I reckon it’s just another way to get chocolate in ya.
And then there’s this “black sanding sugar” folks use. I guess you can buy it already colored black, or you can color it yourself. They sprinkle it on all sorts of desserts to make ’em look like coal. I seen pictures of cakes and cookies all covered in this black sugar. Looks kinda strange to me, but like I said, folks these days got all sorts of ideas.
I even heard of someone making “coal” out of Rice Krispies treats, just adding black food coloring. Can you believe it? Putting food coloring in perfectly good Rice Krispies treats just to make them look like something you wouldn’t want to eat! But I guess that’s the whole point, ain’t it? To trick your eyes and surprise your taste buds.
Now, me, I prefer a good old apple pie or maybe a peach cobbler. Somethin’ wholesome and familiar. But I guess there’s nothin’ wrong with tryin’ somethin’ new every once in a while. These coal desserts, they might be fun for a party or somethin’. Especially around Christmas time, when they talk about Santy Claus bringin’ coal to the bad kids. You could give these desserts to the kids as a joke. They might get a kick outta that.
But honestly, I don’t see the point of makin’ food look like somethin’ you wouldn’t wanna eat. Seems kinda backwards to me. But hey, I’m just an old woman. What do I know about fancy desserts? I stick to what I know – good, simple food made with love. That’s the best kind of dessert, if you ask me.
Desserts that look like coal might be a fun novelty, a conversation starter, a way to make the kids giggle. But at the end of the day, it’s all about the taste. If it tastes good, then who cares what it looks like? And if it don’t taste good, well, then you just wasted a bunch of good ingredients tryin’ to make somethin’ look like a dirty old lump of coal.
So there you have it. My two cents on these coal-lookin’ desserts. Take it or leave it. I’m gonna go bake myself a nice apple pie. Now that’s a dessert worth eatin’.
